REALTORS® Urged to Attend Redistricting Town Hall Meetings

The City of Houston’s Charter provides that when the City’s population tops 2.1 million, the City is required to create two new single-member District Council seats. While that milestone was passed in 2006, the City decided to wait until the official results of the 2010 Census.

Now that the census data is available, Houston’s 2011 redistricting will require major surgery across the city, especially on the west side, where most new growth has occurred. The insertion of two new districts—each with about 210,000 residents—into the current map will cause extensive modifications to the existing nine City Council districts as well as the current state and federal representation lines.

To ease the public’s tension and create a smooth transition, Houston City Council will conduct a series of town hall meetings within each Council District during the month of March. REALTORS® are encouraged to attend their District’s meeting to gain valuable information about what will happen during the redistricting process and have the opportunity to provide their own input.
