In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and recovery efforts by the City of Houston property owners and volunteers, the HAR Board of Directors held a special meeting on September 26 to hear first-hand from Mayor Sylvester Turner who had proposed a temporary one-year emergency property tax increase which would have cost the average Houston homeowner $48.

At a Houston news conference the following week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott presented Mayor Turner with a $50 million check for Hurricane Harvey relief. This action by Governor Abbott prompted Mayor Turner to rescind his proposed temporary property tax increase.

The money, which comes from the $100 million disaster relief fund appropriated to Abbott’s office during the last legislative session, will go toward immediate relief needs such as reconstruction.
