Safety Alert from a Fellow HAR Member

HAR shared with its members a variety of safety warnings throughout the holiday season. Last week, we received the following account of a threatening situation facing a member and wanted to share it with you. HAR, in turn, asks that you please share it with your office staff.

“Like many REALTORS®, I advertise with magnetic signs on my car. Recently, while driving on the Southwest Freeway, I received a call from a blocked number. The man said he had been behind me and noticed my rear tire was low. I had just exited the freeway and thanked him for calling. He insisted that he was not busy and if I pulled over he would be happy to help change it. I thanked him and told him I would call AAA. He called again, asking if I had pulled over. He again insisted that he had time to help change the tire and asked where I was. I thanked him again and said it was not necessary. I drove around for a while to make sure I wasn’t being followed then pulled into my bank. There was nothing wrong with my tires.”

HAR urges you to contact the police as soon as possible any time that you believe you are in danger.

  1. First and foremost “no one should be talking while driving on the freeway or as quoted just exiting the freeway” anyone who does is risking there life as well as those innocent drivers adjacent to them.

    As a fellow Realtor, I would be very ashamed if a Realtor with or without magnetic signs caused a wreck on the freeway or street……due to cell phone use. Everything else is common sense as we all live in a big city with many questionable profiles in it.

  2. I can’t ever remember getting any valid leads from signs on my car.  However, I do use them from time to time when I am surveying a new subdivision.  Just to let people know I am not scoping our houses to break in later.

  3. Something similar happened to me;.  I did not have my magnetic sign on.  He pulled up next to me, said he ; noticed some minor damage on my car and assured me he could fix it on the spot.  Right!  I did NOT pull over; I asked for his phone number; he said the one he had was not his and didn’t know the number; I asked for his card – he didn’t have one.  He did follow me for a while.  He had a young woman in the passenger seat – perhaps to make me feel comfortable.  I did not.  He finally gave up.

  4. In addition to the possible danger, many Realtor are not aware that by putting magnatic signs on their vehicles makes them a commercial vechicles which requires commercial insurance coverage. If you have a wreck and signs are on your car without commecercial coverage, your insurance company has every right to pay the claim on your auto as well as the other vechicle.

  5. I don’t take blocked calls anymore after a bad experience from one regarding a listing. If they block their call, they don’t want to be known.

    1. What’s the Sandra Bullock line from the “Blind Side?”   …  “If you so much as set foot downtown, you will be sorry. I’m in a prayer group with the D.A., I’m a member of the NRA and I’m always packing.”  🙂 default9018 {“method”:”validate”,”params”:[],”id”:1,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″} default9018 {“method”:”validate”,”params”:[],”id”:1,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″} default9018 {“method”:”postAsGuest”,”params”:[“Michelle Hatmaker”,”mhatmaker@hatmakergroup.com”,””,false,null],”id”:2,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″} default9018 {“method”:”postAsGuest”,”params”:[“Michelle Hatmaker”,”mhatmaker@hatmakergroup.com”,””,false,null],”id”:2,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″}
